You ran as fast as your short, scarred legs could. Your body ached but you didn't care. Anything to get away from your pursuers. You were an 8 year old girl who recently became an orphan.
A few days ago you had been thrown out of your home, by your own father, your only living family. Your mother had died when giving birth to you and you didn't have any siblings.
The abandonment forced you to mature above that of an 8 year old, but not in a good way. You had managed pretty good on your own so far, hiding in the shadows, sneaking small amounts of food from bypassing people and sleeping under a bridge. But this time you weren't feeling well and had been caught in action and now they were chasing you.
"Come back here, you little thief!"
You didn't listen (I mean who would?) and kept running. You ran until you were certain you weren't followed anymore.
You noticed it was quite dark out and decided to find someplace you could sleep. You looked around and noticed a thicket.
You crawled into the hedge and quickly fell asleep.
Sometime during the night you fell out of the hedge and into someone's backyard, but you didn't notice that in your sleep.
~The next day~
Romano woke up relatively early and got up and got dressed. Veneziano was at that potato bastard's house, and he had spent the night there. What the hell did he see in that bastard?! He yawned as he went downstairs to the kitchen where he noticed that the basket of tomatoes was empty.
'Dammit... Time to get some from the garden, I suppose.' he thought and sighed.
He grabbed the basket and went out to pick some fresh tomatoes from his garden. That's when he noticed a small body sticking out from his hedge. He quickly dashed over to it and noticed it was a little girl, no more than 8 years old.
"What the hell is a little girl doing in my backyard?!" He shook her trying to wake her, but it didn't work. He noticed that her face was flushed and that her breath was heavy and choppy, so he pressed his hand against her forehead, but quickly retracted it.
"Oh hell! She's burning up!" he exclaimed and swiftly scooped her up in his arms. He dashed inside and laid her down on his couch. 'What the hell happened to her? Her body's scarred all over!'
She started stirring in her sleep. "P-papa... M-mama..." she mumbled in her sleep. "I... I'm s-sorry..."
Romano looked at the girl in surprise. Sorry? For what? He raised himself from the floor and left the room, only to come back a few moments later with some blankets, cold water and a piece of cloth.
He dampened the cloth and placed it on her forehead.
As soon as the wet cloth made contact with the girl's forehead she opened her eyes, and when she saw Romano, her eyes turned wide in fear and shock.
"AHH!!!" she hurriedly scampered off the couch and tried to get away, but collapsed after only a few steps. Romano walked up to her.
"Hey, what's wrong? You have a fever, you need to rest!" He stretched his hands out to grab her. She screamed again, louder than the last time.
"NO! STAY AWAY!! DON'T HURT ME!!" she screamed at the top of her lungs terrified and backed up against the wall.
'What the heck happened to make her so terrified of others?' "I'm not going to hurt you. I want to help you." Romano said calmly, not wanting to scare her further. "Why would you think I'd hurt you?"
"DON'T LIE!! Don't lie! That's what... all... adults... do..."
The girl fell down to the floor unconscious. Romano was quick to scoop her up and bring her back to the couch, where he tucked her in once more. He placed the damp cloth back on her forehead again, since it had fallen off during the commotion.
'What the fuck has this girl been forced to go through?'
Romano decided that he would watch over her until she got better.
~A few hours later~
You still hadn't gotten better. In fact, you only seemed to be getting worse. You had slept a lot, but the fever refused to drop. One of the few moments you had been awake you had told Romano your name, after he got you some food, and he had told you his. He had asked about you about your parents but you had refused to answer.
Romano watched you as you slept. Your breathing was still heavy and choppy, and you murmured a lot in your sleep.
Romano came back with new cold water to change your cloth. When he placed the newly wet cloth on your forehead you grabbed his hand in your sleep and weakly murmured "No... don't... leave me..."
Romano's face softened. 'She may have been through a lot, but she's still just a bambina...'
Just then Italy decided to come home and barge in through the door. "Vee~ Fratello, I'm home~!"
"Shut up, stupid fratello! And keep your voice down!"
Italy came over. "Oh, who's this bella bambina, Romano~?"
"Her name's [Name], and I just found her this morning in my garden with a very high fever."
"Vee~ What happened to her?!"
"I don't fucking know!" he accidentally raised his voice a bit, so he glanced to you to make sure you hadn't woken up you hadn't.
"Oi, fratello, I think I'm going to take care of her from now on."
"Doesn't she have parents?"
"I don't think so. I tried asking her about it, but she didn't answer."
"I see... Then can I help you too, Romano~?" Italy asked happily.
"WHY THE FUCK WOULD I--" he stopped mid sentence. "Urgh... Fine whatever..."
~Time skip to that night~
You woke up from a terrifying nightmare and sat up with a start, looking around where you were.
"Where am I?" You barely remembered anything from the day so you didn't recognize where you were.
You turned your head and saw someone with dark auburn hair sleeping by your side. You let out a small shriek at the sight of the stranger, effectively waking him up.
"What's wrong?" he asked with an Italian accent.
"Who are you, and where am I?" you curled up in the corner of the couch shaking.
"Don't you remember, bella?" You shook your head. You didn't remember this man at all and you were very wary towards strangers, especially adults, after what your father did to you.
The tanned brunette sighed. "I'm Lovino Vargas." he started before explaining more in detail how he'd found you and what happened while he was taking care of you. This sparked a few memories in your brain from your dazed day.
You felt your head drooping a bit. "I'm dizzy..." you said as your head dropped completely, your body was not slow to follow. The man quickly caught you in his arms and prepared to lay you down on the couch once more before changing his mind, and brought you to his room instead and tucked you in. He didn't want to disturb your sleep so decided to take the couch for the night.
As he went back down to the living room, Romano started wondering. What was it with this girl that made him want to protect her and help her so dearly? He didn't even cuss when he talked to her. Augh! This is all so fucking confusing! Romano decided it was better to just fall asleep.
